How to calculate an ad budget
A sound ad budget is calculated backwards from the goal. For e-commerce: Max ad budget = Revenue target × (Gross margin − Target net profit rate). With a 40% margin and a 10% profit target you can spend up to 30% of revenue — $150,000 on a $500,000 monthly target. That is a profitability ceiling, not a spending goal. Then check feasibility: Orders needed = Revenue target / AOV; Clicks needed = Orders / Conversion rate; Estimated budget = Clicks × CPC. If the estimate exceeds the ceiling, the calculator tells you the maximum CPC or minimum conversion rate that would make the plan work.
Break-even ROAS, target ROAS and max CPA
Break-even ROAS = 1 / Gross margin (2.5 at a 40% margin). Target ROAS = 1 / (Gross margin − Target profit rate), about 3.33 in the example — enter 333% in Google Ads' Target ROAS bidding. Max CPA = AOV × (Gross margin − Target profit rate). These three numbers decide which campaigns to cut and which to scale.
Planning a B2B ad budget
In B2B the budget comes from the customer target and the funnel. Ten new customers a month at a 25% lead-to-SQL rate and 20% SQL-to-customer rate requires 50 SQLs and 200 leads; at $90 per lead that is an $18,000 monthly budget and $1,800 ad CAC. The calculator shows the CAC payback period from annual revenue per customer and gross margin, and the maximum cost per lead that keeps payback within 12 months.
